Alcons Audio er en av verdens fremste produsenter av lydutstyr til kinoer, PA-anlegg og screeningrom. Den patenterte, ekstremt kraftige men samtidig svært sofistikerte bånddiskanten er selve "hjernen" i systemet. En bånddiskant har blant annet evnen til å gjengi transienter og detaljer på en svært overbevisende måte, og med Alcons diskantløsning er samtidig den største svakheten med denne type element, nemlig for lav effekt i filmsammenheng, løst. Det er ikke uten grunn av Colosseum kino nylig byttet ut sitt JBL-system med Alcons, det samme gjorde Universal Studios i sitt screeningrom i London (CRMS-systemet). 

I motsetning til tradisjonelle kompresjonselementer vil en bånddiskant låte langt "roligere" og "ekte", noe som har vært en velkjent fordel i Hi-Fi-miljøet i mange år. Ulempen med denne type diskantløsninger har imidlertid tidligere vært mangelen av effekt, som er helt avgjørende i kinosammenheng. Dette har Alcons løst på en brilliant måte. Selv den minste serien, som selges hos AVshop, leverer hele 50W RMS og fantastiske 800W peak i diskanten, derav kallenavnet "Baby Hulk" (6"-varianten har tilnavnet "The Hulk"). Resultatet er "Hi-Fi"-lyd selv ved høye lyttenivåer. Det betyr imidlertid selvsagt ikke at den kun låter bra ved høy SPL! Bånddiskanten som benyttes leverer fantastisk høy dynamikk også på moderate lyttevolum. En skal samtidig være oppmerksom på at dynamiske effekter og tale krever relativt høy grad av diskanteffekt selv på moderate lyttevolum for å gi den nødvendige troverdighet.

En annen svært vesentlig fordel bånddiskanten fra Alcons stiller med er evnen til å gjengi en stabil frekvensgang over et utrolig bredt nedslagsfelt. Dette er svært viktig i både kino og screening, der en ønsker at lydbildet også skal være stabilt utenfor "sweet spot" (midten av lyttefeltet). Alcons patenterte bånddiskant leverer nærmest sømløs gjengivelse i opp til 90 grader i alle frekvensregistre, også de høye, der de normale kompresjonselementene mister mye av effekten og dermed frekvensgangen utenfor "sweet spot".

Alcons 401-serie passer i screeningrom såvel som spesielt seriøse hjemmekinoer. Produktene er tilpasset bruk bak et lydtransparent lerret, der produsenten kun legger vekt på ytelse, ikke design (som jo uansett ikke er av betydning når høyttaleren plasseres bak lerretet!).

NB! Alcons er en meget seriøs aktør. Alle Alcons-oppsett solgt via AVshop må settes opp for seg. Det er bl.a. krav om bruk av Alcons forsterker på alle Alcons-høyttalere, og disse må derfor selges samlet. Forsterkerne er spesialtilpasset høyttalerne, og leverer bl.a. en dempningsfaktor på mer enn 10.000 ved bruk av avanserte korrigeringskretser. RBN1801

The RBN1801 is an 18" professional ribbon transducer with a peak power handling of 3000W. and is currently the most powerful ribbon driver on the market. It features two patents. Alcons’ RBN transducers are the only pro-ribbon drivers with “Real-90” horizontal dispersion up to 20kHz.

       
 

Alcons' ribbon drivers were developed by Philip de Haan, sr. R&D engineer and 20+ year veteran in ribbon transducer technology. He is initiator of a number of significant patents and can be seen as "father" of today's high-output pro-ribbon technology.

De Haan: "Since 1983 we've been expanding the learning curve and did a lot of research on new materials, techniques and production processes. We've tested every medium-to-large sized ribbon driver on the market, to see and measure for ourselves what the current status of ribbon development is. Now this know-how has led to a new generation of ribbon drivers with the RBN601 being the first result of that."

Over the last years, the ribbon has gained popularity in the pro-audio market, because of the
fast transient response and the accurate sound reproduction, required by today's new high-resolution media, like SA CD a.o.. The low weight moving mass of the diaphragm results in a transient response which delivers exceptional clarity, intelligibility and throw. Ribbon drivers feature extreme low distortion, only 1/10th of the THD of existing (compression or dome) drivers. Because of the different working principle, a ribbon driver does not have a "compression threshold", maintaining the same tonal balance at all sound pressure levels. The flat-response caters for increased "gain-before-feedback" even in the most critical circumstances.

The RBN-series pro-ribbon drivers are the only ribbon transducers delivering real 90° horizontal coverage (patented). The wide dispersion, combined with the natural cylindrical wave pattern, makes them ideal for line-array applications.

The RBN1801 is the latest development in Alcons pro-ribbon technology. With the on-going research on array-technology, the need existed for a larger, single-diaphragm driver: Of course, a larger radiating surface can be made with multiple smaller drivers, but this will drastically sacrifice the degree of frontal-radiation, which is one of the main criteria for line-source behavior.

The effective radiation length of 18" / 46cm. offers an extreme power handling of 210W RMS and 3kW peak (for 200ms, which is ten times the industry standard) and a very high efficiency of 108dB with 1Watt @ 1m. With a 90-degree wave-guide, this efficiency even rises to 110dB, with a frequency operating range of 1kHz. - 20kHz.(+/-3dB) and a maximum SPL of 145dB.

The RBN601 has a true power handling of 70W/1000W, enabled by the proprietary designed heat-management (patent pending) and an unsurpassed efficiency of 103dB (log average 2-10kHz 1W/1m), making it the most powerful ribbon driver unit in its category. With its "Alcons green" color scheme, the driver has therefore been nicknamed "the Hulk" ;-)

The RBN401 is a scaled-down version of the RBN601. With a power handling of 50W/800W and an efficiency of 100dB (log average 2-10 kHz.) it's "the Hulk"s smaller brother, therefore named "baby Hulk".

Philip de Haan: "During the market research we found that not only the technology but also accuracy of the production process is critical with this type of technology. True craftsmanship and experience are essential for production stability with this type of transducer technology."

Ribbon tweeters have traditionally been characterized as fragile, with low power handling, low efficiency and low impedance. With the low weight moving mass, the ribbon offers considerable advantages in response especially at frequencies of above 8kHz. In this "fidelity-area" of the sound spectrum, the ribbon doesn't suffer from "cone break-up" and the distortion resulting from that. The RBN pro-ribbon drivers are truly a leap forward in ribbon transducers specifically and high SPL sound reproduction in general.

"Today's status of our ribbon technology proves we're heading for the right direction in the evolution of professional sound reinforcement. Currently only a small piece of the great potential of this technology is utilized", says de Haan.

The RBN-series of pro-ribbon transducers is featured in all medium to large Alcons systems, with a choice of wave-guides with 90°x40°, 60°x30°, 90°x10°, 90°x15°, 120°x15°, 90°x3° and 120°x3° pattern.

Perfect front- surround harmonisation The MHF section is specifically designed to act both as MHF section for the main/front system, as well as full-range surround system. This unique design results in a very uniform sound stage from main- and surround system.

HiFi sound at concert SPL! The RBN401 pro-ribbon driver has up to 90% less distortion than any conventional mid/high transducer (@ same SPL), because of the lack of a compression chamber and the light weight diaphragm (with integrated voice-coil).

Perfect speech-intelligibility The fast transient response + the lack of compression "threshold" (the level under which the compression driver doesn’t make enough compression to have actual HF output) brings perfect intelligibility and tonal balance at lowest as well as highest SPL’s.

No listening fatigue Another benefit of the superb transient response and the lack of "time-smear" (a result of the slow moving mass/diaphragm at high frequencies) is the lack of listening fatigue, even after prolonged listening hours.

True 90 degree dispersion The RBN401 features Alcons’ patented "Real-90" dispersion in the horizontal plane. The Alcons pro-ribbon drivers with "Real-90" are the only pro-ribbon drivers offering 90° dispersion up to and beyond 20kHz. (others up to 9kHz. max.)

Digital dynamics The extreme RBN401 power handling of 800W (for 200Ms, which is 10 times the industry standard!), together with the ultra-low power compression (resulting from the patent-pending heat management + the direct air contact of the voice-coil) brings unsurpassed dynamic response.

"Aluminium Radiator" waveguide The RBN401 is mounted on the ALradTM waveguide, made of pressure cast aluminium. Not only this material features a high stiffness, but also has excellent heat transfer characteristics. Forming an integral part of the RBN heat managing chassis, power-compression is further reduced.
 

Very clean signal path As a result of the flat impedance of the RBN401, no impedance correction is needed in the crossover. This allows simpler filter designs, placing fewer parts/obstructions in the signal path, thus offering improved clarity and accuracy of the sound. The "Current-to-light" driver protection, inaudibly protects the drivers for input overload.

Truly accurate mid and bass response; The CRMS cabinets are "SIS pre-wired" for SIS (Signal Integrity Sensing) circuit; In combination with the ALC controller- amplifier, cable/connector influences are completely compensated for (with damping factor of 10.000). This means that the effect of long speaker cables (very common in cinema!) is completely compensated. So, now it is possible to use 2 ohms and 4 ohms front-/sub-systems without any loss of sound quality.

Space-economic design The slim enclosure of the CRMS (13.2"/33,5cm system depth) makes it possible for the CRMS to be mounted behind any screen. With the moveable mid-high section, the directional frequencies can be aimed at the listening position, for optimized projection.

Maximum and reliable performance The front-accessible SDP processing module in the ALC changes the stereo amp into a dedicated powered controller of the C-series, offering dedicated excursion protection, system –eq, filtering and power control, for maximum component performance. Digital dynamics without any chance of blown-up speakers!

Plug & play! The system comes complete with speakers, amplifiers, processing and mounting hardware. It’s easy to set-up and needs only additional cabling. Even eq’ing the system takes very limited time!

Extended headroom With system equalizing done by the SDP circuit of the ALC controller-amp (instead of by the passive crossover), the mid/high section of the CRMS delivers up to 4dB more system headroom, starting at 800Hz. It’s combining passive-filter amplifier-efficient powering with active-filter component-efficiency output.

Sustained power output The combination of Class G power amplifier stage with a 210 Joules capacitor bank makes the ALC deliver super-dynamic and sustained power output for even the most dynamic digital soundtracks.

Easy connection The ALC controller-amplifier features a 15-pin D-connector, that makes connection to processor very simple. The D-connector is fully compatible with existing cinema booth monitors, featuring this type of connector.

Explanation In order to make the differences between traditional compression-driver technology and Alcons’ advanced pro-ribbon technology visible, below the waterfall diagrams ("spectral decay plots") of both technologies are shown:

Left is the response of a 2" state-of-the-art" compression driver. It is clearly visible that the initial frequency response changes at around 8kHz. The time- (impulse)response shows that the membrane of the speaker is still generating sound, even after the signal has stopped. This is due to the heavy moving mass of the compression driver, which causes "time-smear" and distortion.

Right is the response of the 6" pro-ribbon driver. The initial response remains flat up to the highest frequencies. The time-(impulse)response shows that the membrane of the speaker stands still very soon after the signal has stopped ("high transient response"). This is due to the light-weight moving mass of the pro-ribbon.

The high-tech materials of the pro-ribbon diaphragm enable a very high power handling of 1000W., which in practice makes the RBN601 more durable than a compression driver (the CRMS features the RBN401 with 800W peak/200msec).

Connection; The CRMS is a bi-amped system, so one CRMS on one ALC2st controller-amp (1 unit per amp). The system has an 8 ohms impedance.

The CB181sl subwoofer has an 8 ohms impedance. It is possible to run four pcs. CB181sl on one amplifier channel (2 ohms). Just make sure, the amp has enough output to drive the four CB181sl’s. The effect of the low-impedance is corrected by the Signal Integrity SensingTM circuit.

To activate the Signal Integrity SensingTM pre-wiring of the CRMS and CB181sl, it is necessary to use 4-core loudspeaker cables (1+/1- signal, 2+/2- SIS sensing), with NL4 connectors.

Warning!; Make sure the wiring is done correctly, as wrong connection can severely damage the amplifier!

Processing; The controlling of the speakers (optimized filtering, excursion protection, RMS/peak power control) takes place in the SpeakerDriveProcessor (SDPTM) circuit of the ALC. This saves the cost of an external loudspeaker management system and protects the system from wrong settings (which can destroy the system).

The speaker-specific SDP modules are placed next to the volume meters, in the front of the amp, behind the lid. This prevents unauthorized tampering of the settings.

Furthermore, this modular set-up of the processing, enables easy "swapping" of the ALC from a front speaker amp to a sub amp.
